Seating is very limited, so advance purchase is recommended. The concert is co-sponsored by Utah Public Radio and Import Auto.Fingerstyle guitarist and composer, Bill Mize appeared with the emerging acoustic guitar movement in the 1980s (by way of the Windham Hill Guitar Sampler and the Winfield Guitar Competition), and has continued to develope a style and sense of taste that influences many of today's guitarists.

Applauded by critics and guitar enthusiasts alike for his composition, tone, emotion and smooth "multi-part" style, Tennessee guitarist Bill Mize is a past winner of The National Finger- style Guitar Competition at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. (Guitar Player Magazine has labeled this event the U.S. Open of guitar competitions) Bill's music is featured on the Grammy-winning recording, Stellaluna, as well as popular guitar compilations Windham Hill Guitar Sampler by Windham Hill Records and Masters of the Acoustic Guitar by Narada Records.

John August Music/Mel Bay Productions have transcribed Mize's second cd, Tender Explorations, into a songbook, and several guitar magazines have published some of Mize's arrangements and original compositions. Bill tours nationwide and is a frequent clinician / performer at guitar camps including the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, and Steve Kaufmann's Guitar Camp in Tennessee.While Mize has drawn inspiration from legends of soul, jazz, folk and rock, his original music is more difficult to peg.

It has been described as varying from delicate Appalachian highland melodies executed with classical sensitivity, to greasy Memphis grooves, performed in such a smooth yet syncopated fashion, you'd swear there was another guitarist on stage. Rather than only rely on wowing with his impressive "chops", Bill draws an audience in with his composition, emotion and tone. Ice Center Needs Stories for Olympic Legacy Exhibit

The George S. Eccles Ice Center is opening a permanent Olympic Legacy Exhibit for Cache Valley in spring of 2007. The display will be showcased at the Ice Center and will feature stories, pictures and videos of Cache Valley's experiences and interactions with world-classathletes during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

This isn't only a historical display, it's a cultural one as well, that'll fill a need for depicting the history of how the Eccles Ice Center and Cache Valley participated in Utah's Olympic Games," said Janet Borg, Executive Director of the Eccles Ice Center. "We're excited to finally have the financial and community support we needed to make this happen."

According to Co-Project Director, Lisa Paxton, community involvement is crucial to the success of the display, "The Olympic Legacy Exhibit is fully dependant upon the people of Cache Valley. Without their pictures, stories and memories, the whole Olympic experience in our valley would be forgotten over time," said Paxton.

In winter of 2002, local residents and businesses welcomed more than 80 athletes to the valley for a four-week training period prior to the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games. Among some of the athletes that trained at the Eccles Ice Center were the Chinese short-track speed skating team, Russian and French figure skating pairs and the Swiss and Slovakian national hockey teams.

The Eccles Ice Center will be accepting any contributions from Cache Valley residents that include photos with these Olympians, stories of personal interactions with them or tales of how an "Olympic moment" may have changed someone's life.

Funding for the Olympic Legacy Exhibit is provided by the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation.

John Gallagher Joins Staff

Stokes Nature Center is pleased to announce that John Gallagher has joined the staff as the Director of Education. John comes to SNC with over 12 years of varied nature education experience including a professional residency program in environmental education at the Teton Science Schools.

He is most recently from Indiana where he was the Interpretive Naturalist for the Indiana State Parks. Prior to that he was an Exhibit Director at Explorit Science Center in Davis, CA and spent weekends guiding students of UC Davis Outdoor Adventure programs on backpacking trips. He has a BA in Natural History from Prescott College, Prescott AZ. In his free time, John enjoys hiking, backpacking, skiing and watching hockey, but mostly he enjoys spending time with his wife Maria and children Quetzal and Caliope.

John’s responsibilities include design, development and implementation of all education programs along with the training and supervision of all teaching staff. He will help SNC to carry out its mission, to provide opportunities for students of all ages to explore, learn about, and develop appreciation and stewardship for our natural world. Come Hoot & Howl at Stokes Nature Center’s Dinner/Auction Fundraiser

Enjoy an evening of fun, folly and fine dining at Stokes Nature Center’s 9th Annual Dinner/Auction Fundraiser on Saturday, November 4 at the Copper Mill Restaurant. This year’s theme will be “Creatures of the Night” and guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite night creature.

Crawling, slithering and sneaking in the night, snakes, spiders and insects of all kinds will guide guests through the evening’s fun festivities including a contest for the best costumed creature. Special guests include a visit by the displaced planet, Pluto who will allow her loyal fans to have their photos taken with her before she finds permanent residence elsewhere. An original painting by local artist, Jerry Fuhriman celebrating SNC’s upcoming 10th Anniversary will be unveiled.

The evening will start at 6:00 p.m. with a social and silent auction. Dinner will be at 7:00 with the evening program to follow featuring board president, Chris Sands and executive director Jen Levy. A live auction to follow will be hosted by Val Grant.

Guests will hoot and howl as the evening progresses with a goal of raising $30,000 for educational outreach programs for the upcoming 2007 year. This event helps to carry out its mission, to provide opportunities for students of all ages to explore, learn about, and develop appreciation and stewardship for our natural world.

Reservations are recommended as tickets usually sell out. Individual tickets are $35 per person or $350 per table.
